Process: Oscar & Gusto

For Ben and Chris's wedding, I decided to do a portrait of their beloved cats, Oscar and Gusto, in my favorite medium for drawing animals, colored pencil.

This is Canson Colorline paper, which I like for colored pencils, this one is "graphite". Next, I want to trace out my kitties.

I always use white or light grey colored pencil for this, because it's easier to cover than graphite, and when I couldn't find exact reference photos for their cats, I turned to my trusty, live-in model.

Next I want to rough in the black and white, to guide my light and shadow, and designate where the cats' stripes and marks go.

An important thing I've learned with colored pencils is 1. to go slow and layer, and 2. to get the waxiest, pigmentiest pencils you can, I prefer Prismacolor.

Add in the sharp edges, fur and whiskers at the very end, and it's done!
